Free workshops, youth activities, housing counselors, one-on-one sessions, and more at festivities designed to help Black families build intergenerational wealth
The learning and fun begin at 10 AM on Saturday at the Power Center, 12401 S. Post Oak Rd. Houston, TX 77045. Until 3 p.m., participants will learn about gaining wealth from workshops, one-on-one consultations, seminars, and other activities that aim to empower Black communities with steps towards homeownership, property investment, starting a business, and other wealth-building opportunities.
We believe the time for action on Black Wealth is now. NAREB urges our Black communities to take the journey towards wealth. Come to the event and learn what you need to purchase a home. We are helping Black families overcome the biased public policies and private practices that created the vast wealth gap in America today.
Homeownership is the driver of wealth, especially for Blacks. The equity from owning a home can be used to start a business, pay for a college education, and comfortably retire. It is the centerpiece of family economic security.
“We will go into these communities nationwide, locate these families and individuals, educate them, and inspire them to build wealth,” said Courtney Johnson Rose, a Houston native and President of the NAREB. “Systematic racism has plagued our communities and impeded our ability to gain wealth, but we can overcome these challenges. In addition to the Black lawyers and Black Mayors, we are working with Black fraternities and sororities to help us locate people who can be put on a path toward intergenerational wealth.”
Among those speaking at the event Saturday will be Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, who is Honorary Chair of Houston Wealth Building Day; Felicia Guidry, President Houston NAREB chapter; Dr. Courtney Johnson Rose, Houston developer, and NAREB National President; Rodney Elis, Harris County Commissioner; and Martha Castex-Tatum, Vice Mayor Pro-Tem.
Among the Workshops Will Be:
- What To Do With Your Parent’s Home
- Black Men Buy Houses
- Building Good Credit & Leveraging It
- Real Estate Investing
- Explore Careers in Real Estate
- Faith & Civic Leaders Roundtables
- Seller Options in Today’s Market
- Where Is The Money: Down Payment
- Sellers & Buyers Assistance Programs
There is even a course on heir’s property, educating Black consumers on how to properly pass along real estate and protect themselves from gentrification.
“Our goal is to end disparities and help Houston and other Black communities thrive,” said Dr. Rose. “The Building Black Wealth Tour will provide critical data, information, and advice to community members. We will ensure community members know about homeownership opportunities, estate planning, and real estate investing. We want Black families and individuals to have access to cutting-edge tools that can help them take the next step.” Learn more about the tour at http://www.narebblackwealthtour.com
